What makes Europe so specific is social democracy. This expression conveys the idea that in this type of society social actors as such have their say when it comes to defining social, economic and political priorities. This is what socially regulated economy really means. But this legacy is now running the risk of being dissipated.
Is such an eventuality really bound to happen? let us first figure out how industrial relations, whether at the national level or at the European level, can still wield an influence on key social issues, such as restructuring policies or wage negotiations.
How to get social partners (employers as well as trade-unions) more involved in counter-acting the effects of the financial globalisation which is undermining the very basis of the socio-industrial systems and social protection in our countries?
A European conference held in Saint-Etienne, France, on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 September will conclude the whole biennial 9th session
